For those interested in new information regarding autism, I enclose the following links. The first one, is about a new autism drug: Oxygen. It was a fascinating read:

The second article is about a 13 year old Canadian girl who learned to communicate via using a laptop. This story has made headlines all over the world:

  1. I will look at the links. I will also add that while taking part in the UCLA Writing Project in the spring of 2001, one of the other teachers told me about using computers with his autistic students. Apparently many autistic children do very well with computers, learning to spell and communicate through them. I’ll take a look at the articles. They do sound interesting.

  2. In all honesty Corina, resource rooms have been pairing computers with autistic kids for years. So this is not new news for me. The story is an interesting one despite this. In my opinion, the majority of autistic kids who do well with computers are higher functioning or Asbergers kids. Many moderately functioning autistic individuals too so well with them. It is even more beneficial when a high functioning autistic person with little or no verbal skills uses them. What many people dont realize is that autistic people are individually unique like our personalities. What one autistic person talents are will be a handicap for another, etc. The challenge for most of these people is how to deal with thier sensory challenges. For many, the sensory impairments they suffer from, distract them from everything else. So they appear “retarded” and are anything but. I’m glad you are looking into them. Enjoy! 🙂
